The weather is starting to be warmer and families are wanting to spend more and more time outdoors. Family BBQ’s and get togethers are some of my favorite times of spring and summer. The only thing that can scatter a group of family members enjoying a meal quicker than sudden summer storm is the appearance of wasps looking for a snack.
Wasps are predators feeding mostly on insects including caterpillars, flies, crickets and other pests. During the late summer, when their queens are done growing their colonies, their food choice changes to sweets and carbohydrates. This is when we are most likely to run into wasps, and unfortunately is when wasps have a tendency to become more aggressive.
Wasp colonies only last for a year, with only the queen surviving the fall. The queens mate in late summer and then hide in tree bark, or in siding of homes. They will then emerge in early spring, when the weather warms up, and then search for a new place to build a nest. Normally wasps will build their nests on limbs, overhead eaves of buildings, and supports in attics, garages and sheds.
